Health & Safety Policies & Management Systems

Most managers don’t wake up in the morning excited about writing their health and safety policy.

All too often, it is begrudgingly written because it is a legal responsibility. Even then, it might have been cobbled together from something you downloaded online or an old one from years ago. Perhaps you have had it on your to-do list for ages but haven’t gotten around to updating it for far too long.

Does any of this sound familiar? If so, get in touch. Health and Safety is what we do. Creating and writing health and safety policies and manuals is our bread and butter.

We can get it done for you, thus fulfilling your legal obligation, ensuring your employees are protected, and finally getting it off your to-do list.

A Health and Safety Policy details the company’s commitment to health and safety, who is responsible for health and safety and how it will be managed, and the responsibilities of company employees in terms of health and safety.

An important factor of a Health & Safety policy is that everyone in your business feels safe and protected.

It may detail a management system that will include risk assessments, accident reporting, fire safety, manual handling, hazardous substances, etc.  It may also include safety manuals, safe systems of work, or method statements.  It should be freely available to all employees.

Why do I need a Health and Safety Policy?

The Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and the Environmental Protection Act 1990 place a duty on employers to:

  • Prepare a written Health & Safety Policy Statement (when employing five or more persons)
  • Set out the Organisation and Arrangements for implementing the Health & Safety policy
  • Revise and update their Health & Safety policy on a regular basis
  • Bring the Health & Safety policy and arrangements to the notice of all employees

Health & Safety Policies don’t need to be daunting and hard work. Simply call CQMS, and we will write a bespoke health and safety policy for your organisation.

Risk Assessments

Every company with 5 or more employees is legally required to have written risk assessments, which have been carried out by a ‘competent person’.

A risk assessment looks at all your company’s work activities and considers what could go wrong and what could put your employee’s health and safety or lives at risk.  The workplace risk assessment then recommends what action should be taken to either eliminate or, if not possible, reduce the risk as far as reasonably possible.

How can CQMS help with your Risk Assessment?

We believe that everyone should have access to excellent, reliable Health and Safety advice, and it is vital that everyone in your organisation feels comfortable that they are working in a safe and protected environment.

CQMS will ensure your risk assessments are written in full (no templates from us) enabling you to get on with what you do best.    We can provide a range of risk assessments including:

  • General risk assessments to comply with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • COSHH risk assessments to comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002
  • Manual handling risk assessments to comply with the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
  • DSE risk assessments to comply with the Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992
  • Fire risk assessments to comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

CQMS can assist you further by preparing any site-specific risk assessments and supporting method statements (safe systems of work); site-specific risk assessments take into account the actual site conditions and type of project and address only the relevant hazards.

All CQMS Risk Assessments will be completed in full by CQMS' trained and competent advisers and will be tailored to your company and your activities.

Fire Risk Assessments

If you're responsible for a building, it’s important to do all you can to reduce the risk of fire to keep people safe. It saves lives, it’s your legal duty, and it makes good business sense.

A Fire Risk Assessment is a legal requirement.

If you are responsible for a building, for example, an employer, owner, or occupier of premises that aren't a 'single private dwelling' (a private home), you need to make sure a suitably competent person completes a Fire Risk Assessment.  You must identify fire risks and hazards in your premises and take appropriate action.

How CQMS will help you

CQMS will support your company and carry out your Fire Risk Assessment as per PAS79-1: 2020 (part 1), the Code of Practice.

CQMS will produce a fire risk assessment report detailing the findings of the assessment including an action plan.
