Care Home Fined After Resident Was Injured in Fall
A Wake-Up Call for Safety in Care Settings
A care home for vulnerable adults has been fined after a resident sustained severe injuries from a fall. Airdrie Sheriff Court heard how on 29 July 2019, a resident of Hillend View Care Home was found lying on the ground outside his bedroom window by a care assistant. The resident had fallen 4.5 meters, suffering multiple fractures, including a fractured pelvis and right humeral head.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that the safety chains in the resident’s bedroom window were inadequate in preventing falls. Further, the care home had not conducted proper risk assessments to evaluate the fall risks for vulnerable residents.
Hillend View Limited of Airdrie Road, Caldercruix, was found guilty of breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and fined £21,000.
The Importance of Fall Prevention in Care Homes
Care homes house some of the most vulnerable members of society, and falls are a leading cause of injury in these settings. Speaking after the hearing, HSE inspector Kim Ross emphasised, “Risks of falls from windows in care settings are well documented in HSE guidance. This incident could so easily have been avoided by simply carrying out correct control measures and safe working practices.”
Preventive Measures for Care Homes
Care homes can implement several safety measures to prevent falls:
- Install Window Restrictors: All windows on higher floors should have restrictors that limit the window opening to 100mm.
- Conduct Regular Risk Assessments: Review each resident’s risk factors for falling and update assessments regularly.
- Ongoing Training for Staff: Train all staff on fall prevention practices, including identifying risks and responding to incidents.
